Melkbos Fisheries has been part of the Melkbosstrand community since 1993.
On 1 February 2011, our family took over the Fisheries, and it has been a true family business ever since.
Today, Morne and Ilke own and run Melkbos Fisheries, together with Ilke's parents, Oom Koos and Tannie Linda.
You'll usually find Oom Koos or Morne on the front line, serving customers and keeping things moving, while Linda is behind many of our homemade favourites — from salads, rice and pickle fish to preserves and jams. She also prepares the mix for our own-recipe Hake Fish Cakes and Snoek Samoosas, made right here at Melkbos Fisheries.
Ilke takes care of the admin and much of what happens behind the scenes, keeping everything running.
When our family took over in 2011, the menu was simple — fish, calamari and chips — and those traditional favourites are still at the heart of what we do.
When Gail joined us, she helped us introduce a grilled option, giving customers another way to enjoy their fish and calamari.
Over the years, we continued adding more to the Fisheries. Being part of a coastal community, bait and a small selection of fishing tackle became part of the shop too, giving local fishermen a convenient place to pick up a few essentials.
When Chef Onias joined our team, we expanded the menu further. With his help, we introduced different flavours alongside our traditional favourites, including our Thai Curries.
Today, Melkbos Fisheries is still the neighbourhood Fisheries our customers know — just with a little more to offer.
Melkbos Fisheries was featured on kykNET's Platteland Toe Season 5. Watch their visit to our little corner of Melkbosstrand.
Our team has grown with us over the years, and some of the familiar faces our customers know have been with us for many years.
Monze joined us in 2011, shortly after our family took over, followed by Gail in 2012.
Onias joined us in 2021, and in 2023, Ulandi, Jessie and Elsalene joined the team, bringing some new faces to our growing Fisheries family.
Over the years, many others have also been part of the Melkbos Fisheries family. Some stayed for a season, others for many years, and for some the Fisheries became a stepping stone to new opportunities and the next chapter in their lives. We are proud to have been part of their journey and grateful for the part each of them played in ours.
Together with Morne, Ilke, Koos and Linda, it's the people on the front line, in the kitchen and behind the scenes who make Melkbos Fisheries what it is today.
